The pleasant town of Arras is located in northern France about 100 km off the coast and the English Channel. The down town was heavily damaged during WWI, and the people of Arras did a wonderful job in maintaining the centre's Flemish architectural integrity when it was rebuilt. History buffs will truly enjoy visiting the many unique museums this town has designated as memorials to the people who lost their lives in its turbulent past. With a car hire in Arras, you are just a 55 km drive from Belgium's border or a 2 hour trip from Paris.
One of Arras' most intriguing architectural attributes isn't visible from above ground. Underneath the town lies 20 km infrastructure of caverns, quarries, galleries and sewage tunnels; these are referred to as Les Boves. Some of these passages date back to the 10th century from ancient chalk mines. Throughout the centuries the underground corridors have been used for many purposes such as refuges, wine cellars or even bomb shelters.
The most significant alterations made to these tunnels occurred during WWI when the passages were interlinked so that up to 24,000 people could fit below the town. There was even a small subterranean hospital that was constructed. Today you can see some of these caverns with guided tours.
