Travelling in Chambery with a  Car Hire

With a unique and eventful history, it's no wonder that Chambery has an outstanding historical centre filled with superb historical buildings, statues, fountains, and grand art collections. Drive your rental car into the centre and visit Old Town, the historical heart of the city, which to this day bares much resemblance to how the area would have looked during medieval times. Here you can visit the Castle of the Dukes of Savoy, the Chambery Chimes, and perhaps most impressive, the Chambery Cathedral. Although not anywhere near as impressive as other famous churches from the outside, the real beauty of this 15th century cathedral lies within. The largest ensemble of Trompe-l'oeil paintings in Europe feature on the wall and ceiling, all combining into one magnificent artwork, a must for anyone visiting the city.

Not far from here you can also visit the fantastic Museum of Fine Arts, which houses an excellent collection of art from the 14th to 18th centuries, and also be sure to keep an eye out for the Elephant Fountain, which was built in 1838. Built in honour of General BenoƮt de Boigne, the fountain stands at almost 18 metres in height, and incorporates statues of elephants, as well as a large column.

From Chambery, there are a number of great places you can visit with your hire car. North of the city lies Lac du Bourget, the largest natural lake in France, and the ultimate place to cool off during hot summer months. Also within a short drive of the city are a number of skiing towns, most within convenient distance for a skiing day trip, making Chambery the perfect place to stay in both summer and winter, with great variety of options in the area.
