Without a doubt one of the most picturesque towns in Europe, Carcassone is an attraction in itself, stands as it did many hundreds of years ago. The centre of Carcassone is made up of a massive fortress which was built in the 5th century. Restored back to amazing condition in the 1800s, and to this day appears like a scene out of a fairy tale. Auto Europe offers several pick up locations and a large fleet selection, so finding a car rental in Carcassone is both easy and economical.
As you approach the centre of Carcassone, its easy to imagine you have travelled back to medieval times when kings and their knights ruled the land. There are two entrances to the fortress, so park your rental car near one of the gates and set off to explore this historical gem. You can visit most parts of the fortress, and discover the different sections, and be sure to climb the ramparts to get a spectacular view of the city. Within the walls you can visit Chateau Comtal, a 12th century castle, and also the Cathedral of St Nazaire, which was built between the 11th and 14th centuries. Both are in excellent condition and highly recommended for visitors.
Carcassone is located in the south of France, with easy access to several nearby cities and attractions. For some more historical sightseeing, drive your hire car out to Montagne Noire (Black Mountain) where the ruins of four more castles can be found high up on a rocky hill. Although not as well preserved as Carcassone, the castles are well worth a visit and are still quite impressive.
To the west you can visit the city of Toulouse, or perhaps drive your rental car east to spend a day on the coast. You can relax on the beaches, or visit cities such as Perpignan, Narbonne and Montpellier. The options are endless and you can see it all with your rental car!
