The origins of Limoges can be traced back to the 1st century BC, when a city known as Augustoritum was founded by the Romans near the banks of the Vienne River. The city became well known from the 18th century onwards, as a producer of fine ceramics known as "Limoges Porcelain", a term which is still used to this day. Auto Europe offers several pick up locations and a large fleet selection, so finding a car rental in Limoges is both easy and economical.
Located en route between Paris and Bordeaux, Limoges is a great destination for a stopover when touring France with your rental car, with several sights worth a visit. You can visit the Crypt of Saint Martial, which dates back to the 10th century, as well as Chapelle Saint-Aurelien, and Chateau de La Borie, a 17th century castle located just outside town.
An icon of Limoges is the Cathedral of St Etienne, which dates back to the 13th century. To visit the cathedral, drive your hire car into the city centre, on the east side of the Vienne River, and see the impressive architecture and sculptures within. A short drive north of here, you can visit an equally famous building, the Limoges-Benedictins train station. Built in the 1920s, the station is a building Limoges locals are very proud of, and when it was damaged by fire in the 1990s it was quickly rebuilt to the original design.
For a great day trip, jump in your rental car and head south of Limoges to the village of Rocamadour. Set in a beautiful forest, Rocamadour is famous for being built on the edge of great cliffs which tower over a grand valley. Impressive to this day, the village is a truly unique sight and definitely worth a visit.
