Kauai which is also known as the Garden Isle is one of the oldest Hawaiian Islands. As its name suggests, the natural beauty and purity of the island are well preserved and full of exciting options for discovery. The sun-soaked beaches are perfect for swimming, snorkelling and learning to surf. Alternatively, just relax and read a book on the sandy beach. While not the largest city, Lihue is the most popular city and is full of interesting and impressive things to see and do. Step back to 1930 and experience life at Kilohana Estate, a restored 14th Century estate with a sugar plantation village, traditional theatre, railway and working farm. Participate in a traditional Luau, a celebration of food and entertainment, to learn about Polynesian culture. The uniquely Hawaiian dance Hula is actively practised on Kauai. Learn the legendary story of this dance where a handsome Kauai chief danced before Pele, the volcano goodness and fell passionately in love at the Ka Ulu o Laka heiau temple.

The Wailua Falls, located just north of the city, is a step off the beaten track. You don't want to forget your camera as two streams cascading over a drop of 25 metres are a spectacular sight. On the east side of the island, the village of Kapa'a is the handmade shopping capital of Kauai. Markets with crafts, jewellery and traditional garments allow you to take a taste of Kauai home with you. Kapa'a has perfect crystal clear waters ideal for canoeing, so rent a canoe for a solo voyage or take a group tour around this natural paradise. Up North, Ha'ena State Park is home to 4,000 caves, shore fishing and spectacular views of the Na Pali Coast.
