Anchorage is located in the south-west region of Alaska, between the Shelikof Strait and the Gulf of Alaska. Temperatures are surprisingly warm during the short-lived summer (13° - 26° C), but it does get much colder during the winter when temperatures average drop between -1° and -15° C. Regardless of the weather, wildlife can often be seen within the city limits, as bears and moose are frequent visitors to the city streets. Visit the Alaska Native Heritage Centre or Anchorage Museum to learn more about the state's history and development. Then take a walk along the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, where you may spot beluga whales off the coast in the summer months (you can find them near the Cook Inlet). As one may imagine, there is plenty of skiing and snowboarding near Anchorage, so take your pick from the city's many ski areas and hit the slopes!

While on holiday in Anchorage, Alaska, it's well worth your time to take a day trip to Chugach National Forest, the second largest national forest in the United States. This beautiful natural preserve covers an incredible 23,000 square kilometres and provides a diverse mix of scenery, ranging from temperate rainforests to glacial mountains. Chugach National Forest offers guests a rare chance to view an untouched piece of the North American wilderness. If you continue driving south on the Seward Highway through the park, you'll reach Seward, Alaska in a couple of hours. Seward is a tiny town, but well prepared for visitors. Seafood is incredibly fresh, with plenty of restaurant and accommodation options, making it a lovely stop for a night before heading back to Anchorage.

    Parking and Tolls in Anchorage

As with most cities, parking in the city centre during busy hours can be limited. Meters and car parks are available throughout the city and are generally quite cheap. Meters are US$1.25 per hour and car parks can be as low as US$1 per hour.

If you're travelling outside of the city, you are likely to encounter toll roads. Tolls in the US can vary greatly, from less than $1 to upwards of $10. If possible, research your route beforehand and carry cash. Change is usually available through tellers at toll booths. Occasionally, you will need coins in various denominations for unmanned booths.
