Thought to be the oldest tourist destination in the UK, Bath has been attracting visitors since the times of the Romans. With naturally occuring thermal springs and stunning scenery, it's not hard to see why. Bath has historic architecture few places in the UK can rival, with both Roman remains, as well as an abundance of Georgian architecture throughout the city and surrounding area. With museums, theatres, parks and gardens throughout the city ready to be explored, what better way to get around than with the ease and comfort of your own rental car. Auto Europe offers several pick up locations and a large fleet selection, so finding a car rental in Bath is both easy and economical.
Built on the banks of the River Avon, Bath is surrounded by rolling green hills and meadows. Seen as a sacred site by both Celts and Romans, the area was originally names Aquae Sulis, when it was settled about 2000 years ago. Park your hire car near the centre of the city, where you can visit the Roman Baths Museum and see first hand how the Roman's used the thermal springs to rest and relax. The museum is built above the original baths, with water still flowing and houses many artifacts and displays on their history.
For a spectacular view of Bath and the surrounding area, drive your rental car a little north west of the city, and visit Beckford's Tower, located in the cemetery on Lansdown Hill. The tower was built for English writer and politician William Beckford, who used it as a library and retreat. Today, it houses a museum containing various historical items, as well as having an undisturbed panoramic view of the city and countryside from the top.
Apart from the remaining Roman structures, Bath has an abundance of well preserved architecture from the 18th and 19th centuries, when it was a highly popular destination for the wealthy English. Simply driving around the city in your hire car you will come across many fine examples of Georgian architecture and heritage listed buildings. One of the most popular stretches of road in the city is Royal Crescent, located just a few blocks north of the city centre. A row of magnificent townhouses lines the road, all connected in a large semicircle shaped building.
Back in the city centre, there is quite a few more sites worth visiting. Bath Abbey is a 15th century gothic church in excellent condition, and also highly recommended is Pulteny Bridge, which crosses the River Avon. There is a row of shops incorporated into it, making it one of the few bridges in the world where you can shop above the water. Due to its central location, Bath is an excellent departure point for daytrips with a rental car. Just to the north you can visit the city of Bristol, or a few hours to the east you can spend the day seeing the sights of London. The possibilities are endless with your hire car!
