Rockhampton is a well-preserved city, with several historic buildings open for the public to enjoy. The post office, Supreme Court House and St Joseph's Cathedral, all built in the late 1800s, are excellent examples of the architecture of the time, and still stand in all their glory. Once you have arrived, drive your hire car to Customs House, which was built in 1900 and today is an information centre for tourists, and a great way to start your visit to the area. To learn about the history of the area, the Old Borough Chambers are home to the Rockhampton Historical Society, where there are several displays showing the region's early development.

Built on the Fitzroy River, Rockhampton has loads of water-based activities for visitors, such as canoeing, boating, water skiing and fishing. A unique form of accommodation is also available here, in the form of houseboats in which you can stay. One of Australia's oldest botanical gardens is also found in the city, founded in 1869 the Rockhampton Botanic Gardens is home to many exotic and local plants, some of which are over 100 years old. Take your car rental to the nearby Dreamtime Cultural Centre, the largest of it's kind in Australia. Here you can learn about the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander way of life, see dance performances, and learn to play a didgeridoo.

Tour the East of Rockhampton in your rental car, where you will find the Capricorn coast, a stretch of coastline from Emu Park to Yeppoon, and including Byfield, Kemp Beach, Causeway Lake and Shoalwater Bay. From here you can also take trips out to Great Keppel Island. Park your hire car at the secure parking at Kemp Beach, and head out on a ferry for a day on the Island. The island has 17 white sandy beaches and many facilities for tourists. The area is popular for cruises, snorkelling and glass bottom boat tours.
