Travelling in Devonport with a Hire Car

With the drive from the north end of Tasmania to the south being under 3 hours, a hire car truly is the best way to experience the island and all it has to offer, with much to see and do before leaving the city also. While in Devonport, an interesting place to stop is the Tiagarra Aboriginal Cultural Centre, where you can learn about the original inhabitants of the area, as well as their culture and connection with the land. Also worth checking out is the Devonport Maritime Museum, which tells of the local marine history and houses lots of memorabilia and historical items. The museum also has displays showing the development of various industries in the area, such as whaling, shipbuilding and farming.

To get an idea of the rugged coastline early settlers were met with, drive your rental car up to the Mersey Bluff Lighthouse, an excellent vantage point to see the coast, and here you are highly likely to encounter some of the local penguins too.

The area around Devonport features sweeping mountain ranges, forests and farming areas, and there is plenty for visitors to see. The Don Village and Don River Tourist Railroad is popular with many tourists, and houses a museum telling the tale of early pioneers, and is also home to a working vintage steam train. The hills and mountains of the region contain many secret caves, with the Gunns Plains Caves set up for tourists to explore. There are free guided tours which will take you through an underground world of stalagmites and stalactites, and the river which formed the caves still flows today.

In the same area, and also a short drive from Devonport in your rental car is one of Tasmania's most famous attractions, Cradle Mountain. With amazing views of lakes, streams and ancient forests, many tourists come here each year to experience a land that has seen little change since prehistoric times. A full day can easily be spent exploring the mountain, and there are walking tracks to suit all levels of experience and fitness. Not far from Cradle Mountain you can also find Tasmazia, a complex of mazes and colourful miniature houses that will provide fun for the whole family. If you are heading south from Devonport, drive your hire car to Chudleigh, and check out the famous honey farm. See the bees at work, and sample the fine honey they produce.
