Travelling in the Northern Territory with a Hire Car

Many visitors begin their trip in the Northern Territory with a visit to the state's capital, Darwin. A well developed tourism industry makes Darwin an excellent place to find out about all the Northern Territory has to offer, and plan your trip. While in Darwin, you can visit several museums and galleries, or drive your rental car out to one of the local crocodile parks. Located on the northern coast of Australia, Darwin has several swimming beaches, a great luxury in this part of the world. A few hours south-east of Darwin with your hire car, you can visit Kakadu National Park. A vast contrast to most of the state, Kakadu is a massive protected area, filled with waterholes and vegetation. The famous local wildlife includes thousands of freshwater crocodiles, as well as many unique species of birds that call the park home.

After Darwin, the next well known destination in Northern Territory is Alice Springs, located right in the centre of Australia. Also rich in culture and local attractions, "the Alice" as it's known to locals, is a popular base for visitors to the famous national parks and rock formations nearby. Within driving distance of Alice Springs is the world famous Uluru. An enormous sandstone rock, rising almost 350m from the desert floor, and having a circumference of over 9km. Make sure to be there to see sunset or sunrise at Uluru, famous for changing colours as the crosses the horizon.
