One of the most well-known facts about Dresden is that it was heavily damaged by bombing during the Second World War. Many of the city's oldest buildings were destroyed, but a great many survived and are presently being restored, creating an interesting contrast between the classical and the modern. The Frauenkirche (Church of our Lady), was largely destroyed in the bombings, and for forty years the ruins were left as a reminder, but in 2005 work was finished on a complete reconstruction of the cathedral, based on the original designs of 18th-century architect George Bahr, and incorporating much of the original structure's material.
In the early 1700s, King August the Strong of Poland assembled many of Europe's finest artists and musicians in Dresden, and the city's museums and architecture reflect this diverse mingling of cultures. The Albertinum Museum houses a gallery featuring Raphaelite paintings, and the Zwinger Palace contains several museums featuring some of the greatest works in Europe.
The neo-Renaissance Semperoper, built-in 1841 is one of Europe's most renowned opera houses and saw the debut of several Wagner works. The opera house sits in Theater Square in the central part of Dresden. Be sure to visit the beautiful Kreuzkirche, home to the Dresdner Kreuzchoraa famed boy's choir whose history dates back to the 12th century.
