Hire a car in Offenburg, located near the western border of Germany. Offenburg is a picturesque city, blessed with vast areas of beautiful scenery, unique culture and a style all of its own. Although Offenburg sadly lost much of its historic buildings during the war in the early 1800s, the past 200 years have seen plenty of intriguing historical events unfold here adding to the unique character of the city.
Dating back to the 12th century, Offenburg was a free city until becoming incorporated into the Grand Duchy of Baden. Less than 50 years later, however, the first democratic revolution ever to take place in Germany was declared in the city at the Salmen Inn, which still stands to this day. Drive your rental car into the city, and visit the building, which is located near the town centre. A short distance west of here, you can visit the oldest building in the city which is still intact after the disastrous fire of 1689, and two World Wars. Known as Capuchin's Monastery, or Kapuzinerkloster in German, the building dates back to the 17th century and has many great historical features and architecture, a must for anyone visiting the city.
To learn about the past of the area, drive your hire car a few blocks north of the monastery and visit the Ritterhaus Museum, which is housed in an 18th-century mansion. Once home to the local mayor, the building now contains many displays on the history, culture, folk art and traditions of the region, a great way to find out about the city and its people.
Being set in the lovely natural countryside makes Offenburg the perfect base for exploring these rural parts of Germany with a rental car. You can follow scenic winding roads through the Black Forest in the east, or perhaps just cruise along the banks of the Rhine River to the west. With so much natural beauty around, it's easy to see why Offenburg is becoming more and more popular as a destination for travellers.
