Navigating around this city is not difficult as Mannheim's streets are laid out in a grid pattern. The city was rebuilt for the 3rd time in its history during the 1950's, and a nickname it has acquired since then is "die Quadratestadt." In German, this means "City of the Squares."
While in Mannheim be sure to visit the Wasserturm (water tower). It is the city's most famous landmark, and the tower has a nice park with fountains surrounding it. It is a short drive to the Schwetzingen Palace from downtown and makes for a great day trip. It has impeccably kept English and French gardens as well as an ornately decorated theatre onsite.
