Travelling in Bolzano with a Car Rental

Regardless of what time of year you visit Bolzano, the great scenery will provide a beautiful backdrop for your holiday. The Alps stretch for as far as the eye can see, and with your rental car, you can even visit Austria to the north, or to the west you can check out neighbouring Switzerland. Simply cruising around and exploring the mountains is worth a day in itself, with stunning views, and many historical sites found throughout the area. To learn a little about the region, check out the South Tyrol Museum of Natural Science, which houses loads of great displays on the local environment.

Not only known for its great natural surroundings, Bolzano is home to a number of great historical attractions also. Bolzano Cathedral is definitely worth a visit, dating back to the 13th century, the grand gothic building is still in use to this day. For fans of architecture, the nearby Maretsch Castle and Mercantile Palace are recommended sights to visit, as is the Runkelstein Castle, which was built in 1237 on the edge of a cliff and containing huge mural paintings.

One of the most famous attractions in the Bolzano is without a doubt the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology. Located in the city centre, the museum houses a great collection of artifacts, some as old as 15,000 years, and is also home to the famous "Iceman" Ötzi. Discovered in 1991, Ötzi is the name given to a mummified and frozen man, thought to be over 5000 years old. Of great interest to the scientific community, Ötzi is a rare example of those who lived in these parts thousands of years ago, no doubt taking advantage of the lush mountains and lands much like the locals do today.
