When you think of summer in Greece what comes to mind? Whether it's the turquoise ocean, blue and white buildings, frappes on the beach or sun kissed skin, a summer in Greece will make you fall in love with this beautiful country. There is plenty to see and do in Greece, particularly in summer so pack your nikes, swimmers, hat and favourite cocktail outfit because you are in for a treat.
First plan a visit to the Acropolis. A visit to this historic monument is a must. Not only will you be able to say that you climbed to the top, but the views of the city once you arrive are breathtaking. Take in the 360 degree views of the city of Athens and the different regions it's in divided into. The Parthenon at the top is a temple that was built for goddess Athena and decorated with sculptures created by Greek artists.
Tip: Go early in the morning, before 10am as the air temperature is cooler than later in the day. Wear enclosed shoes, take a hat and some water and be prepared for an enriching experience.
Monastiraki and Syntagma are the go-to shopping precincts in Athens. In these areas you will not only find boutique shops but also mainstream fashion stores, eateries, markets and other attractions. Syntagma Square is the main square in Athens where you will find Parliament House. The changing of the guard ceremony occurs every Sunday at 11:00am and is something you should try and see if you are in the area. There are lots of fashion boutiques to visit including big European labels such as Zara, H&M, Sephora, Mango, BSB along with small independent boutiques where you will find unique, one-off items. Apart from clothing there are also many shoe and jewellery stores where you can find something nice for yourself or a loved one back home.
If you walk to Monastiraki you will discover similar shops but also be able to visit the markets. These sell great shoes, bags, clothing, trinkets, luggage, authentic ouzo and olive oil and other souvenirs. Prices for these items can be negotiated if you are willing to barter with the store owners (always a fun thing to try). If the shopping and heat has you exhausted take a seat and enjoy a meal at one of the many traditional Greek tavernas in the area. Try delicious Greek lamb, home-made tzatziki, authentic Greek salad and much, much more. If you are on the run try a Gyros, chips, lamb, onion, tzatziki and tomatoes wrapped in pita bread they are YUM!
After a day of eating, shopping and exploring head to the A for Athens rooftop bar in Monastiraki, just opposite the metro station. Take the elevator to the top floor and arrive at the open-air rooftop bar. The open cocktail lounge setting gives you the opportunity to enjoy some refreshing beverages whilst overlooking the city by night. The Acropolis is lit up and looks just as majestic by night as it does during the day and is only an arm's length away (well, not literally but it's pretty close!). We recommended getting here soon after sun goes down because it can get quite busy.
