January 26th marks the day Australians come together to celebrate Australia Day, commemorating the anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet from Great Britain. If you are celebrating in Australia, chances are you will be heading down to the beach or having a barbecue, however if you are overseas you don't have to miss out on the fun! We have discovered the best places to join in on the Australia Day celebrations whilst you are travelling. The global celebrations grow larger every year!
The largest Australia Day celebration outside of Australia is held in the United States every year with the G'Day USA campaign held over 10 days in January. Join in on the fun and celebrate Australian food and wine, travel, film, art & culture, fashion and business. Main events include the G'Day USA Gala held in Los Angeles on the 28th of January. In the past this event has attracted Australian icons such as Paul Hogan, Cate Blanchett, Chris Hemsworth, Mel Gibson and Nicole Kidman.
For something less fancy and more traditional, drive down to the Annual Australia Day BBQ, cricket and netball celebration held in Houston, Texas and join in the fun at Bear Creek Park. This is a great way to spend the day like you would down under, with a game of cricket and a snag on the barbie. Highlights include an Aussie vs Poms cricket match, and an Aussies vs rest of the world netball game.
For those lucky enough to be travelling in Canada this January, celebrating Australia Day is as easy as picking up your car hire (or motorhome) at Vancouver Airport and driving two hours north until you reach Whistler. Producing some of the best snow of the year in January, it is a cool contrast to the scorching hot temperatures of Australia.
