Going Overseas? Celebrate Australia Day The Aussie Way

January 26th marks the day Australians come together to celebrate Australia Day, commemorating the anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet from Great Britain. If you are celebrating in Australia, chances are you will be heading down to the beach or having a barbecue, however if you are overseas you don't have to miss out on the fun! We have discovered the best places to join in on the Australia Day celebrations whilst you are travelling. The global celebrations grow larger every year!

The largest Australia Day celebration outside of Australia is held in the United States every year with the G'Day USA campaign held over 10 days in January. Join in on the fun and celebrate Australian food and wine, travel, film, art & culture, fashion and business. Main events include the G'Day USA Gala held in Los Angeles on the 28th of January. In the past this event has attracted Australian icons such as Paul Hogan, Cate Blanchett, Chris Hemsworth, Mel Gibson and Nicole Kidman.

    BBQ With Friends

For something less fancy and more traditional, drive down to the Annual Australia Day BBQ, cricket and netball celebration held in Houston, Texas and join in the fun at Bear Creek Park. This is a great way to spend the day like you would down under, with a game of cricket and a snag on the barbie. Highlights include an Aussie vs Poms cricket match, and an Aussies vs rest of the world netball game.

For those lucky enough to be travelling in Canada this January, celebrating Australia Day is as easy as picking up your car hire (or motorhome) at Vancouver Airport and driving two hours north until you reach Whistler. Producing some of the best snow of the year in January, it is a cool contrast to the scorching hot temperatures of Australia. Whistler or Whistralia as it's now commonly known due to its high population of Aussie employees, is where you will find some of the best international Australia Day celebrations. Fancy dress parties on the ski slopes are not uncommon, and by 9am resort bars and clubs are packed with people rocking out to Triple J's hottest 100 (another Aussie tradition!).

    United Kingdom

There are more Australian expats living in London than in any other city in the world. This means you can certainly count on London to find awesome Australia Day celebrations. Travellers flying into London can organise hire car collection at Heathrow Airport, or one of many convenient downtown locations to discover the city and join in the celebrations. Nicknamed the 'Straya Day Weekender', various Walkabout bars party for four days with live music, beers and bingo.
