    Driving in Turkey

A combination of old and new, and where the east meets the west, Turkey is a country with a unique culture, amazing natural beauty and vast areas ready to be explored. The gateway between Europe and Asia, Turkey has a rich history, with the many nationalities passing through having left an impression. With stunning coastlines along the north, south and west of the country, and amazing sites throughout the country, Turkey is popular with travellers from around the globe, and an ideal destination to tour with a rental car.

Once known as Byzantium, and later as Constantinople, Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey and was previously the capital of several empires. Located on either side of the Bosporus Strait, one half of Istanbul is classified as part of Asia, while the other as Europe, the only city in the world located across the border of 2 continents.

A great way to see the grandeur and unique nature of the city is from one of the lookouts. Drive your rental car to the Galata Tower, built in the 14th century, located on the European side of the city. Climb the steps of the tower to the observation deck, from where you will get an excellent view of the city. While in Istanbul, be sure to also visit Hagia Sophia Museum, once the largest church in the world. The church later became a mosque and now functions as a museum, housing many historical items, and features amazing mosaics and artworks within its construction.

On the Asian side of Turkey, the west coast of the country is one that is a truly unique experience to visit. Drive your hire car along the coast, where you will not only find amazing natural beauty, but also ruins dating back thousands of years. In particular is Ephesus, one of the best preserved ancient cities in the world. Located near the city of Izmir, the ruins of Ephesus date back over 3000 years, and are in amazingly good condition.

Head inland in your hire car, towards the city Denizli, where you can visit nearby Pamukkale. A giant step-like structure of white cascades, Pummakale was formed by hot springs rich in calcium which has deposited over thousands of years. The waters are a comfortable temperature to swim and bathe in, and are one of the most popular attractions in Turkey.

Another attraction in Turkey not to be missed is Cappadocia. Drive your car rental toward the centre of the country, where you can visit an amazing landscape like nowhere else in the world. Cappadocia is where entire cities have been carved out of volcanic rock, with homes, mosques, schools and mausoleums still intact and accessible to the public.

    Licence Requirements

You must be at least 21 years old to rent a car in Turkey, although the age may vary by car category. You must have held your licence for a minimum of 1 year. Drivers under the age of 25 may incur a young driver surcharge. Some suppliers may have a maximum age limit.

    Tolls and Freeways

A few toll highways exist in Turkey. It is required that all cars are enrolled in the HGS Automatic Toll System, and that an electronic-chip sticker or toll transponder is affixed to the windscreen of the car. It is not possible to pay for use of the tolls roads with cash or credit card so make sure you have one of these devices in your rental car.

    Border Crossings

Due to insurance regulations, there are restrictions on all car categories and on travel into certain countries. Please ensure that your intended itinerary will be possible with the car you plan to rent. Cars rented in Turkey may not be taken out of the country. Domestic one-way rentals are available and additional fees and rental durations may apply. There are no international one-way rentals permitted from Turkey.
