Founded around 2000 B.C. the capital city of Ankara has emerged as a favourite destination for travellers, largely due to its vibrant history and importance in the Turkish society. Ankara is filled with historical buildings and ruins throughout the city and surrounding areas, so there is more than enough for visitors to explore. Head to Atakule Tower, located in the southern part of the city centre. Standing at over 120m in height, the tower offers amazing panoramic views of Ankara and features a revolving restaurant, the perfect place for dinner overlooking the city lights. Don't miss the Ankara Citadel, a fortress and historical part of the city. Although many of the walls have been reduced to ruins, much of the fortress remains, as do many historical homes in the area.
While exploring Ankara, visit the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations, which tells the story of life in the area and houses phenomenal collections dating back 10,000 years. Discover the grand sculptures and artworks of Anit Kabir, the Mausoleum of Mustafa Ataturk, who played an important role in the founding of the Turkish Republic. A few blocks south east from Anit Kabir you can see Kocatepe Mosque, the largest mosque in Ankara, decorated with marble, gold, stained glass windows and crystal chandeliers. Have no doubt that this incredible structure will impress any visitor to Ankara
If you're travelling outside of Ankara you can visit Cappadocia, located about five hours south east of the city. Cappadocia is one of the most unique parts of Turkey and arguably the only area of its kind in the world. Here you can visit the underground city, carved out of the volcanic rock by early Christians in need of defensive shelter during the Roman Empire. To this day many of the man-made dwellings can be visited, offering a glimpse into life in this region nearly 2000 years ago. From Cappadocia, drive to Hattusas, the capital of the Hittites which is located only an hour and a half away. Closer to Ankara you'll find Gordion, a city that has served as home to many of the most important ancient societies of this region since 3000 B.C., located less than 100km from the city. For a relaxing getaway, head to the thermal springs Kizilcahamam, surrounded by forests and only a one hour drive outside of Ankara.
