The second largest city in Croatia, Split is a popular travel destination, complete with stunning scenery and a rich history. Located on the shores of the Mediterranean, Split is the perfect place to stay while exploring the coastline and surrounding towns and villages. Taking a walking tour through Diocletian's Palace or one of the original Egyptian sphinxes at Jupiter's Temple (there are two in the city, the other at Peristil Square). Sunbathe on the beach at Ba?vice and take in the stunning views of this spot on the Dalmatian Coast.
Just a short distance northeast of Split, head to the ruins of the ancient Roman town of Salona, near Solin. Complete with the remains such as the amphitheatre, churches and baths, Salona is a great place to explore Roman ruins without enormous crowds. Driving west along the coast, you'll find Trogir- a remarkably well preserved medieval town, located mainly on an island connected to the mainland by a bridge. Featuring medieval walls which still surround much of the town, along with a well-preserved church and cathedral, Trogir is well worth a visit. While here, be sure to check out Kamerlengo Fortress, which dates back to the 15th century.

Street parking in Split can be rare, but it is available. The city is split into four zones, with the first being in the city centre near Diocletian's Palace, where charges will be the highest. The further out from here, the cheaper the cost of parking. Note that if you do not pay the appropriate charges, or park illegally, you may be towed. Most parking in the first zone is 10-15 kuna per hour (roughly €1.50-3). Some locations, labeled in blue and green zones, will allow the purchase of a daily parking ticket.
Tolls are common in Croatia and the total cost can range from about €5 to over €100 depending on distance and roads travelled.
