    Driving in South Africa

With natural beauty and wildlife rated among the best in the world, it's easy to see why self-drive holidays in South Africa are so popular with travellers. A true African experience, with excellent facilities for tourists, makes South Africa the perfect destination for those wishing to experience life on this unique continent.

Cape Town is among one of the most popular destinations in South Africa. Once you have picked up your hire car, a great way to become familiar with the area is a drive to Table Mountain, just a little west of the city centre. From the top of the mountain, you will get superb views of Cape Town and the surrounding area.

South Africa is famous for its beaches with Boulders Beach in Cape Town being one of the most popular. A unique landscape of giant granite boulders covers many parts of the beach, which is home to a large colony of penguins. The penguins are quite used to humans, so much so that visitors can actually swim with them in the surf.

Northeast of Cape Town is another of South Africa's popular cities, Johannesburg. Here you can drive through lion parks with your hire car; the city is also the departure point for many game parks and reserves. Further northeast of Johannesburg is Kruger National Park, one of the most famous national parks in the world. The park is home to more mammal species than any other reserve in Africa, and a must for anyone travelling in the area.

    Licence Requirements

You must be at least 18 years old to rent a car in South Africa, although the age may vary by car category. You must have held your licence for a minimum of 1 year. Drivers under the age of 25 may incur a young driver surcharge. Some suppliers may have a maximum age limit.

    Tolls and Freeways

There are some toll highways in South Africa that all use the E-tag system. Drivers must have an e-tag affixed in their vehicle to use the toll roads and avoid hefty fines.

    Border Crossings

Due to insurance regulations, there are restrictions on travel to certain countries. Please ensure that your intended itinerary will be possible with the car you plan to rent. Domestic one-ways are permitted although additional fees and minimum rental duration may apply. International one-ways are permitted with selected suppliers and fees will apply.

    Useful Distances

    • Cape Town to Johannesburg (1400km approx.13hr)
    • Johannesburg to Pretoria(55km approx.50min)
    • Kruger National Park to Durbin (900km approx.12hr)
