    Driving in Slovenia

A country rich in natural resources, located in the heart of Europe, Slovenia has grown in popularity immensely since breaking away from Yugoslavia in 1991. These days Slovenia is a destination with amazing attractions and loads of bargains for tourists, for those travelling in this part of the world.

The capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana, was home to various tribes throughout the ages and became a colony roughly 2000 years ago when Romans used it as a trading point. Due to the vast natural resources of the area, and its central location between the east and west, the location was the perfect site for settlement and has flourished ever since. Drive to the western border of the city, to see the remains of the Roman city walls, having withstood the elements for thousands of years.

A city with a unique character and plenty of history, there is a wide range of things to see and do for visitors. Drive to Castle Hill, just south of the Ljubljanica River around which the city is built. The castle dates back to the 11th century and provides amazing views of the city. Downhill from the castle, towards the river, you will find Triple Bridge, a famous landmark of Ljubljana. Driving across the bridge is a must, keep an eye out for the large statues of dragons, which are the emblem of the city and guard the bridge.

Apart from the well-preserved history, Slovenia's natural beauty is a major attraction for visitors to the nation. Take a short drive south of Ljubljana to Postojna, where an impressive network of caves can be found. Stretching over 20km underground, the caves are among the largest in Europe and choose something else. During summer months, much of the tourist activity in Slovenia is focused along the coast of the Adriatic Sea. If you head further southwest from Postojna, you will arrive at the coast and you can enjoy activities like sailing, swimming, and fishing, as well as restaurants and a vibrant nightlife.

One of the most popular attractions in Slovenia is Bled Castle located near the Austrian border. Travel north to Bled, and you will find the magnificent castle situated on a cliff 130 metres above Bled Lake. The castle is one of the most picturesque sights in the region, and during warmer months there are plenty of activities on the lake below.
