Founded in the 12th century, Groningen became an important trade centre in the area and soon prospered. While some of the city was damaged in WWII, many of the landmarks and historical sites have remained unscathed, and to this day offer visitors a view into the medieval days of the city. Not far from Groningen, you can take your hire car on a truly unique drive, along the shores of a great body of water. Built in the 1930s, the Afsluitdijk is a massive damn measuring over 30km long and is located just to the east of the city. Follow the A7 highway which runs along the top of the dam, and enjoy the views of miles and miles of open water on both sides, definitely worth the drive out.
