    Car Hire Ghent

Compare and save on Car Hire in Ghent

A city that prospered and grew in the Middle Ages, Ghent has managed to avoid overdeveloping and remains a pleasant laid-back metropolis, minus the highrise buildings found all too often throughout other cities in Europe. A large student population, along with friendly locals that are proud of their city makes Ghent an ideal travel destination, perfect for those who want to see loads of historical sights, as well as artistic and cultural attractions, all of which are set in a city easily explored with your rental car. Auto Europe offers several pick up locations and a large fleet selection, so finding a car rental in Ghent is both easy and economical.

Touring Ghent with a Hire Car

Although settled since the Stone Age, Ghent saw slow growth until the 11th century, when great wealth came to the area and the local population began rapidly expanding. By the 13th century Ghent was one of the wealthiest cities in Europe, and second in size only to Paris, a growth that saw grand architecture, as well as a rich artistic culture, flourish throughout the area for many centuries to come.

To see some of the fantastic early buildings, drive your rental car into the city centre, and set off to explore the historical quarters, which are filled with medieval style houses, cobblestone streets and grand cathedrals. Notable sites not to be missed are the Saint Bravo Cathedral, which dates back to the 10th century, and Gravensteen Castle which was built in the 1100s.

Drive your hire car across to the eastern side of the city, where you can visit one of the oldest archaeological sites in Ghent, the Sint-Baafsabdji Abbey. Built in the 7th century and is a relic from the city's early days. Besides the ruins, you can also visit the 14th-century Belfry, which at over 90 metres in height, offers spectacular views of the city.
