    Driving in the Czech Republic

Lying at the crossroads of Europe and Russia, the Czech Republic has at various times in its history been a part of the Kingdom of Bohemia, the Holy Roman Empire, and later Czechoslovakia until 1993. Throughout the nation a rich and beautiful history is readily available to explore, so be sure you have the means to tour as much of this fascinating country as you can.

No trip to the Czech Republic is complete without a visit to its capital city. You can hire a car in Prague, located in the heart of the nation's Bohemian region, and explore the city which is home to a number of fabulous museums and historical sites, including the famed Prague Castle, the world's largest ancient castle, nearly 570 metres long and 130 metres wide

You can escape the city life on a visit to the Sumava National Park. Located in the Pizen region of South Bohemia, the park borders Germany to the west. Founded in 1963, it is part of an immense forest called "the green roof of Europe."

    Licence Requirements

It is a requirement that visiting motorists carry their valid Australian State or Territory driving licence in addition to a valid International Driving Permit which must be obtained before leaving Australia. The minimum age to rent a car in the Czech Republic is 19 years, though some suppliers may charge a fee for young drivers (25 and under) and you must have held a full licence for a minimum of one year. Some suppliers may have a maximum age limit of 75 years.

    Tolls and Freeways

Cars are required to have a toll sticker to travel on the expressways. Cars rented in the Czech Republic will have the sticker located on the windshield.

    Fleet Guide

You can find details of different manufacturers, models and luggage sizes between car category types in the Czech Republic in our fleet guide. Please note that not all cars are available from all supplier locations, and that the exact model or make cannot be guaranteed.

    Border Crossings

Most car categories can be driven anywhere in Western Europe without restriction, with the UK as an exception. Rental cars which have been picked up in the Czech Republic are generally permitted to travel in to other Central European nations as well. Travel in to Eastern Europe is restricted, with each supplier holding different policies on travel in to specific countries. Additional fees may be charged by the supplier to cover increased insurance costs, and cross-border fees are paid locally in the local currency.
