Drive the New Zealand North Island

Whether you're travelling on your own, with a partner or in a group you will find that New Zealand suits all types of travelers. New Zealand is a wonderfully unique country full of immense landscapes, stunning scenery, rich in indigenous heritage and buzzing cities. New Zealand is recognised as Aotearoa in Maori, which means The Land of the Long White Cloud.

This is a country of world class food and wine, fabulous festivals and celebrated Maori culture and traditions. You'll be able to enjoy a plethora of outdoor activities from the laid-back to highly adventurous, all in the most magnificent natural environments.

Auto Europe have thought of a few 'must do' places to see and great things to do, perhaps on your next self drive holiday to New Zealand.

    Tawharanui

Drive approximately 1 hour north of Auckland and you will come a picturesque location tucked away off a gravel road called Tawharanui. Tawharanui is New Zealand's first Open Sanctuary that integrates conservation, farming & recreation. Take the time out, relax and try a day trip from the city or spend the week camping right by the water, snorkeling through the Marine Reserve filled with colorful native sea life.

    Whangapoua and New Chums Beach

Hidden away behind the winding scenic hills of the Coromandel Peninsular is Whangapoua Beach, an idyllic setting for a private getaway. With only 120 residents you can park your car and spend the day as a local secluded from the crowds. If you are looking for some adventure, put on your jandals and head to the northern end of the beach. Within 20 minutes you'll find yourself on New Chums Beach. Consistently voted one of the world's top beaches this undeveloped slice of paradise will have you relaxing on the white sand never wanting to go home.

The Bruce Road in New Zealand

Tongariro National Park in New Zealand

In the Heart of the North Island just 90 minutes south of Lake Taupo along the Desert Road you'll find yourself in Middle Earth aka Tongariro National Park. Made up of three very active volcanoes; Mt Ruapehu boasting largest ski area in all of New Zealand, Mt Tongariro known for the stunning Tongariro Crossing day walk up over the active multi crater mountain and of course Mt Ngauruhoe, which is Mount Doom itself (if you are a 'Lord of the Rings' fan). Throughout Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring Tongariro National Park is a must see destination with a landscape like no other in the world.

    Piha

Hit the road for a day trip out of Auckland City. In only one hour traveling through 16,000 hectares of beautiful native bush is Piha. Piha is a stunning iron black sand beach. Framed by the rugged west coastline this is one of the best spots to catch the surf, have Fish 'n Chips on the beach or take a scenic walk into the bush up to the Kitekite Falls. No trip to Auckland is complete without a visit to Piha, you might even be lucky enough to witness the 'Green Flash Sunset'.

    Piha, New Zealand

    Rotorua

Rotorua, commonly known as 'RotoVegas' due to being the cultural playground of New Zealand is covered in amazing and unique colorful geothermal activity. Whether you're looking for relaxing spa weekend and cultural experience at the Tamaki Maori Village or if action & adventure is your thing, there is no shortage of activities. Home of the Zorb and the world's first Luge, Rotorua will leave you wanting more.
