Most people these days have at least one pet. To be honest I don't know anyone who doesn't have a pet! It seems like more and more people are wanting to take their beloved animals on holidays with them and why wouldn't you when most of the time they become another member of the family.
When doing car hire though it is important to remember that the car is not yours and that different rules apply to driving around animals. Always check with the rental supplier before taking animals in the car. Domestically in Australia animals are not permitted in any rented vehicle with the exception of guide dogs and other special aid dogs. International car hire companies can have different conditions when it comes to pets but like with anything check before you leave so you don't end up taking your pet across to the other side of the world and then being unable to take them in the vehicle.
Requests can always be made to car hire companies and they will try and help where they can however be prepared to be told your pet is not allowed in the vehicle. If you do decide to take your pet in the car without the car hire company's permission and they find out due to the car being dirty or having a 'doggy' smell you will have to pay a fee to have the car cleaned before the vehicle can be rented out again.
