As with any rental car there are always restrictions when it comes to crossing international borders. Each car supplier has their own rules when it comes to Mexico with some allowing you to travel there and others not. Whenever crossing from one country to another with a rental car always make sure you read the suppliers terms and conditions for all restrictions and additional fees.
When it comes to travelling to Mexico there are a number of suppliers that do permit travel however this only applies from certain depots in the USA. If you do chose to travel across the border car hire suppliers will charge additional insurance and may also charge a one way fee. This will be advised at time of booking and is a mandatory charge. If you decide to drive into Mexico even though in your contract it says travel is prohibited you do so at your own risk. If you have an accident or the vehicle is stolen all insurances will be void and you will be liable for the cost of any damage or the cost of the vehicle if it is stolen.
It is also important to note that Mexican law does not allow Mexican citizens to bring US owned vehicles across the border into Mexico. The law also states that Mexican citizens aren't allowed to even drive a US owned vehicle in Mexico. Make sure you double check your rental agreement and always advise the rental company of where you plan to travel.
