Vehicles in Slovakia travel on the right side of the road with all overtaking and passing done on the left. The speed limit in Slovakia ranges from 50km per hour in the city to 110km per hour on highways. It is mandatory that all passengers in the car are wearing a seatbelt and children must be over the age of 12 to sit in the front of the vehicle. There is no permissible amount of alcohol (BAC) when driving.
In Slovakia, Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and theft protection are included in our Auto Europe rates. The CDW and theft protection reduces the deductible (responsibility of the client) to a capped amount. Fire insurance is also included in your car rental. Excess Refund Insurance can be purchased from Auto Europe when you make your booking. This insurance refunds your excess costs up to $5000 should any damage occur to the vehicles during your rental.
A land of medieval towns, castles, mountains and forests, Slovakia is quickly growing to be a popular destination for travellers visiting central or Eastern Europe. Very consumer friendly prices, strong cultural traditions and loads of historical attractions all make Slovakia a great country to visit and your car hire will get you to places you would otherwise never see.
The capital of Slovakia is Bratislava, located in the south-west corner of the country, near the Austrian and Hungarian borders. To get a great view of the city, drive up to Bratislava Castle, located in the city centre on the north bank of the Danube River. On clear days, you can even see Austria and Hungary.
Head downtown and explore the area known as Old Town on foot. Narrow streets and historical buildings fill the area, a great insight into the history of the city. Check out nearby Michael's Gate, a medieval fortification built in the early 1300s, and then reconstructed in the 1750s. The gate formed as a checkpoint for those passing through the area, and the watchtower at the top provides more great views of the city.
A popular reason for travellers coming to Slovakia is the scenic mountains and forests with which it abounds. One of the most famous areas for touring is Slovak Paradise National Park in the east of the country. Drive through the park and see the magnificent forests, mountains, waterfalls and caves. Be sure to visit Dobsinka Ice Cave, a huge cave which has a frozen interior for much of the year. Visitors have been coming to the cave since the 1800s, and it was, in fact, the first cave in Europe to have electric lighting.
If you drive northeast of the national park you will arrive at Spis Castle, located above the town of Spisske Podhradie. The castle was built in the 12th century and is one of the largest castles in Europe. The surrounding area is very suitable to touring with a rental car, with green rolling hills and pockets of forest across the land.
When driving in Slovakia the driver must have their Australian licence with them as well as an international driving permit. Proof of insurance is also required with you at all times you are driving the hire car. The minimum age to hire a car in Slovakia is 19 years old. All drivers hiring a car must have held their licence for a minimum of 1 year. Drivers under the age of 25 may incur a young driver surcharge and some suppliers may have a maximum age limit.
In Slovakia there are four main toll motorways that incur a fee. These include the D1, D2, D3 and D4. The payment method is through the use of a vignette sticker and it is necessary to have one of these stickers if you are planning to drive on the motorway in Slovakia.
Most car categories can be driven in to Western Europe. There are restrictions on luxury car categories and on travel in certain countries due to insurance regulations. All international travel needs to be pre-approved by the supplier, so ensure that your intended itinerary will be possible with the car that you plan to rent. Cars rented in Slovakia may not be driven into Eastern Europe. Domestic one-way rentals are available and additional fees and a minimum duration may apply. International one-way rentals are not currently available.
