You must be at least 18 years old to drive a car in Russia. Drivers must have held their licence for a minimum of 1 year. Drivers under the age of 25 may incur a young driver surcharge. Some suppliers may have a maximum age limit of 75 years. There are a few mandatory items drivers must have with them whilst driving which include their passport and visa, Australian drivers licence, registration documents and insurance documents for their vehicle, first aid kit, a neon reflective vest, fire extinguisher and emergency triangle sign.
There a few toll roads in Russia. You must pay to use the 18km section of the Lipetsk Highway M-4 from Moscow to Novorossiysk. The fee can be paid in cash. Another toll road is the Western High-Speed Diameter in St Petersburg. This toll can be paid using a transponder, smart card or cash at the toll booth.
Some suppliers may allow travel outside of Russia for an additional fee however it is important to note that all travel is strictly on a request basis and must be pre-approved.
