    Car Hire Dunedin

Dunedin Car HireLocated on the south-east coast of the south island in New Zealand, Dunedin is spread out across the hills and valleys surrounding Otago Harbour, a perfect place to hire a car. The fifth largest city in New Zealand, Dunedin was actually the first settlement to gain city status, due to a gold rush in the 1850s. With rich history and culture, and many well maintained historical buildings, Dunedin is a popular destination for visitors to New Zealand with a passion for colonial history, and a hire car will give you the ability to get around and see the sights that interest you.

The first stop for most visitors to the area is the main square of Dunedin, known as the Octagon Park your hire car near the city centre and explore the square and attractions around it. The Octagon Information Centre is highly recommended, and here you will find maps, brochures and local knowledge on the attractions in and around Dunedin. Not far from the Octagon, are several historic churches, well worth a visit for fans of early architecture. The First Church of Otago, St Joseph's Cathedral and St Paul's Cathedral are all within a few blocks of the main square.

The only castle in New Zealand is also located a very short distance from Dunedin and is open to the public. Larnach Castle, built in 1871 with the finest construction materials from around the world and can be viewed by the public. Drive your hire car through the headland on the south of the harbour, and visit the castle, which is set on the top of a large hill. The picturesque castle also provides great views of the hills and waterways throughout the area and is often used to host balls and weddings.

Frequently Asked Questions about Hiring a Car in Dunedin

Can I hire a car in Dunedin if I am under 25?

In Dunedin, if you are between the ages of 21-25 you'll be able to hire a car with no fuss. However, drivers in this age range should expect that they may likely be subject to an additional daily charge commonly called "young driver surcharge." Depending on your car hire supplier, additional fees will vary and in some cases, may not even apply.

Can I use my licence to drive in New Zealand?

Most countries allow drivers to drive simply utilising their domestic license. Although some car hire providers may not require an international driver's permit (IDP), Auto Europe recommends an IDP for all travellers. When driving without an IDP, there's a risk that local police officers may issue you a ticket - if you happen to be stopped.
