Aside from seasonal holiday attractions, there are plenty for things to see and do in Bulgaria regardless of what time of year you visit. If you head to the north-west corner of the country, you will arrive at the town of Vidin. Near the town, you will find Baba Vida, a medieval castle in excellent condition and definitely worth a visit. If you drive a little south of Vidin you will reach Belogradchik, home to the famous Belogradchik Rocks. Massive sandstone and limestone formations up to 200 metres in height line the area, and there is even a fortress built within them.
It is a requirement that visiting motorists carry their valid New Zealand drivers licence in addition to a valid International Driving Permit and the appropriate insurance documents. The minimum age for renting a car in Bulgaria is 20 years old and drivers must have held their licence for at least one year. Drivers under the age of 25 may have to pay a young driver fee and some suppliers also have a maximum age limit.
