Travelling in Inverness with a Rental Car

Located at the mouth of the river Ness, Inverness has a range of activities to suit visitors, with fun to be had both on land and in the water. One of the most popular attractions in the area is the famous Loch Ness, located just south of the city. Jump in your hire car and drive along the shores of the lake, and make sure you keep an eye out for the elusive Loch Ness Monster. The lake spans a large area of 37km in length, and provides opportunity for some great scenic drives.

On the west shore of the lake, you will find Drumnadrochit, a small village popular with tourists and the centre for most Loch Ness Monster based tourism. Take a short drive from the town centre in your rental car, and visit the ruins of Urquhart Castle, which dates back to the 1200s. The site of the castle also provides great view points of the lake and surrounding area. For an even better view of Loch Ness and the surrounding highlands, follow the walking trail near Drummonadrochit to Divach Falls. The walk leads up to a panoramic lookout of the area, perfect for photo opportunities.

To the east of Inverness you can visit one of the oldest archaeological sites in the area, known as Clava Cairns. Several huge tombs can be found here, comprised of many stones and boulders, dating back to the Bronze Age. Drive your rental car a little further from Inverness, to the north east, where you can visit Cawdor Castle, an excellent example of early architecture in the area. Built in the 1400s, the castle is home to several award winning gardens, some of which also date back hundreds of years.

For another piece of Scottish history, jump in your hire car and head northeast of Inverness, along the coast, and visit Fort George, built in the 8th century. Thought to be one of the strongest fortifications ever built in the UK, the fort is in excellent condition and is quite impressive in it's size and position above the sea.
