If you are flying in to Exeter airport, why not avoid expensive taxis and shuttles by collecting your car hire when you arrive. This way you're free to be on your way, enjoying your holiday without having to wait for others. Probably the most famous of attractions in the city is Exeter Cathedral, which was built in the 15th century and is located in the downtown area just east of the river. Park your rental car near the city centre, and set off on foot to explore the cathedral and other famous sights nearby.
Not far from the cathedral, you can visit the Royal Albert Memorial Museum. A highly regarded museum, housing displays on archeology, history art and the sciences, there are over 1 million objects in the collection, with something for the whole family. For a unique view of Exeter, take a tour of the famous underground passages found beneath the city. Built in the 14th century to house pipes carrying water for residents, the tunnels are one of the few places in the UK you can get a glimpse of the underground.
Jump in your rental car and head south of Exeter, where you will find a great range of attractions for both locals as well as tourists. Just a little outside the town of Kenton lies Powderham Castle, a magnificent building set in a large deer park. With secret gardens, wildlife, and a play castle for children there's plenty for both young and old. Continue further south with your hire car towards the town of Torquay, located on the coastline. Right next to Torquay is Babbacombe Model Village, an entire miniature world complete with cities, cars, trains, people and lights. A unique attraction highly popular with children also.
For a day enjoying the outdoors, take your hire car a short drive west of Exeter, to Darmoor National Park, the largest wilderness area in southern UK. The park features vast rolling green hills scatted with granite boulders and rocky outcrops, creating some spectacular scenery. An excellent area to tour for those lucky enough to have their own rental car, exploring the park will lead you to many rivers, bridges, forests and meadows, as well as numerous historical buildings. A great day out for anyone visiting the southern parts of England.
