A great way to begin your visit to Derby is by heading to the site where all of the excitement began, almost 300 years ago. Not far from the museum, you can visit another of the city's icons, Derby Cathedral. Built in the 14th century in a gothic style, the cathedral is still used to this day and has been preserved in excellent condition.
While an industrial city, Derby has plenty of spaces and reserves for those who love the outdoors. Drive your hire car just south of the city centre, and check out Derby Arboretum, the first public park in England. Donated to the town in 1840, the park includes ponds, flower gardens and large playgrounds for kids. To escape the city all together, head north and visit the Peak District National Park. The first designated national park in the UK, here you can explore the rolling green hills and forests of the area without a care in the world.
