To take advantage of the hot waters coming from below, many of the locals actually use them for heating. There are also spas where you can bathe in the hot waters from below, which are thought to have great healing powers.

Apart from the geothermal attractions the area is famous for, Rotorua remains a pristine area of lush forests, scattered with 16 lakes of varying size. All of the lakes are easily accessibly with a hire car, and are great spots for fishing, kayaking and boating. The rivers of the area can have fantastic currents, and have popular white water rafting. While in the area, drive your rental car out to the Treetops Canopy Walk. Situated 6 metres up in the trees, it's a great way to get a birds eye view of the forest and some amazing views.
