Car Hire in Gdansk

Originally made up of a group of small fishing villages, Gdansk began to grow in the 10th century when a stronghold was built and the local population was baptized. Located at the delta of the area's major rivers, Gdansk was an important sight in terms of defense and trade, leading to several nations fighting for control of the area throughout the centuries. An interesting past, with loads of history and culture, Gdansk is a great place to visit when touring Poland with your rental car. Auto Europe offers several pick up locations and a large fleet selection, so finding a car rental in Australian Capital Territory is both easy and economical. .

Travelling in the Gdansk with a Car Rental

Although heavily damaged during the second World War, the historical areas of Gdansk have been restored to their former glory, and these days are once again a wonderful place to explore. To begin your sightseeing, drive your rental car into the city centre, where you can visit a number of impressive sites and buildings.

An icon of the city, and arguably the most famous building in the area is St Mary's Church, which is also the largest brick church in the world. Large enough to hold 25,000 people, the size of the building alone is enough to impress, along with the artwork and decorations it is easy to see why the locals are so proud of their church. For a great view of the city, climb the stairs to the top of the tower, from where you will get a great panoramic view of Gdansk and the harbour.

Near the church lies another of the city's famous landmarks, known as Eilki Mlyn, or the Great Mill. Built by Teutonic knights in the 14th century for the purpose of grinding corn, the mill was used for over 500 years, only recently being converted into a shopping space.

From here, jump in your hire car and drive over the river bank, where you will find Gdansk Maritime Museum. Dedicated to preserving sites and objects relating to the nautical world, the museum is home to many great items. Be sure to visit the crane, which is the oddly shaped building located on the side of the river hanging over the water. Built in the 1400s to raise masts on ships and load heavy cargo, the building has been restored and is a testament to medieval engineering.

Simply driving around the city, or exploring the centre on foot, you will no doubt find many more great attractions in Gdansk. Worth a mention are the Town Hall, which stands in excellent original condition, and the city gates which have survived from medieval times are definitely a notable site also.
