Head north of Ballina in your rental car towards the coast, and near the town of Killala you will find some excellent ruins that are definitely worth a visit. Moyne abbey is located here, and the remains of this grand gothic building have been well preserved. Built in the 15th century, the abbey once served the local population, and is a testament to the area's past. Not far from the Moyne abbey, be sure to also check out Rosserk Friary. Also built in the 1400s, the friary is not in quite as good condition but still highly recommended.

Further north from here, is one of the area's most ancient attractions, Ceide Fields. An archaeological site which was discovered by accident by locals digging for peat, the fields have been partially excavated, and show the layout of farms and houses that existed here thousands of years ago.

Once you have seen some of the area's historic sites, it's time to see more of the local countryside. You can drive your rental car along the coastline and see stunning massive sandstone cliffs and secluded beaches, or simply head into one of the many forests in the area, and see trees that have stood here for centuries and local animals and birds that call them home.
