Rent Cars in Dortmund
Originating from a small village in the 9th century, Dortmund grew into a large city, and over the centuries played an important role as a producer of steel, coal and beer. Badly damaged by bombings during WWII, Dortmund has been rebuilt as an advanced, well planned city with plenty of outdoor space and loads of well preserved history.
Travelling in Dortmund with a Car Rental
Although still an important city in terms of industry and technology, the rebuilding of Dortmund has had a strong emphasis on the outdoors, with almost 50% of the modern city being waterways, parks, gardens and woodlands. The abundance of outdoor recreation areas has lead to the city earning its reputation as the "green metropolis". While the city does have more than its fair share of attractions and historical sights, it is also the perfect destination for a break in your sightseeing, and a chance to relax in the great outdoors. Simply drive your hire car along the banks of Ruhr River to the south and find a spot for a picnic, or simply take a stroll through one of the many parks located throughout the city.
Among the buildings which have been preserved and restored, there are a few not to be missed if you are visiting the city. Jump in your rental car and head into the centre of the city, which is within the ring road which follows the path of the old city walls. Here you can visit Reinoldikirche, a fully restored 13th century church, and also the famous Petrikirche, which dates back to the 14th century and is home to a magnificent alter with 633 oak carvings depicting scenes from Easter.
For a spectacular view of the city, take a short drive south of here in your rental car, and visit the Floriantum, a massive tower which you will see from afar. With an observation deck over 140m high, the tower offers excellent panoramic views of the area, and for a special night out you can even try the rotating restaurant located just beneath the viewing platforms. For plant and garden enthusiasts, the gardens next to the tower are not to be missed. Here you will find a Rosarium, containing over 3000 species of roses, particularly worth a visit during spring.
