Once a pioneering industrial city, Darmstadt these days is a centre for culture and the arts, creating an interesting contrast between factories and galleries.

With loads of historic attractions, as well as galleries and museums to visit, combined with a much more peaceful way of life than nearby Frankfurt, Darmstadt is a popular city for those travelling through Germany with a hire car who are after a unique experience without the crowds and stress that normally comes with it.

Travelling in Darmstadt by Car Rental

A great way to begin your visit to Darmstadt is by getting up high and seeing the city from above. Park your hire car near the centre of the city, and visit the main square known as Luisenplatz. In the centre of the square is a local landmark, a huge tower with a state of Duke Ludwig in the centre. The tower has an observation platform near the top from which you will be able to see the interesting combination of old and new buildings that make up the city. At the side of the square is the Luisencenter, which houses the Traffic and Tourism Association, a convenient point to purchase your tickets to attractions as well as passes for driving your rental car on certain freeways.

Located a short distance south from the square is St Ludwig Church, a building not to be missed if you are visiting Darmstadt. A huge vibrantly coloured building, the church was the first Roman-Catholic church in the city, and although badly damaged during conflicts has been restored to its original glory and is well worth a visit. A short drive east of here in your hire car, you can visit another of Darmstadt's famous religious icons, the Russian Chapel, which was built in the 19th century. An extravagant church, decorated with artworks and gold leaf, it was built for Russian Tsar Nikolas II who married a local princess and requested a place he could pray when staying in the city.

Not far from the Russian Church you can find one of the most famous parts of Darmstadt, known as Mathildenhohe. Established towards the end of the 19th century, the area was a colony of artists who, partially funded by the city, designed their homes as works of art, viewable by the public. To this day the area is frequented by locals and visitors alike, enjoying the unique building styles and decorations present.
