Named after the famous scientist Charles Darwin, the city is found in an area many plants and animals found nowhere else in the world. A short drive east from the city in your hire car, you can visit Charles Darwin National Park, where you can enjoy walking and hiking trails, and lookouts providing excellent views of Darwin. To the north of the city you can also drive to Casuarina Coastal Reserve, another protected area, covering estuaries, woodlands and beaches. This area has an abundance of wildlife also, and offers spectacular beaches for swimming. Both parks have reminders of the city's importance in World War II, with bunkers and lookout posts throughout the area.
To learn a little about the connection the city had with World War II, drive your car rental to the East point Military Reserve, where you can see artifacts and pictures taken during the war, and hear about the bombings and action that took place locally. For some insight into the areas history and culture, visit the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory. Here you will see local art, and exhibits telling of the founding and development of Darwin.
One of the main reasons people visit Darwin is to see the local wildlife, and in particular, crocodiles. The Mary River National Park is a great place to spot crocodiles, with billabongs around the river being home to the highest concentration of saltwater crocs anywhere in the world. To get up close and personal with them, drive your hire car out to the Darwin Crocodile Farm. This is where many of the crocodiles caught in Darwin Harbor are brought to prevent attacks on people and livestock.
