Named after the famous scientist Charles Darwin, the city is found in an area many plants and animals found nowhere else in the world. A short drive east from the city in your hire car, you can visit Charles Darwin National Park, where you can enjoy walking and hiking trails, and lookouts providing excellent views of Darwin. To the north of the city you can also drive to Casuarina Coastal Reserve, another protected area, covering estuaries, woodlands and beaches.
