Travelling in Slovakia with a Car Hire

The capital of Slovakia is Bratislava, located in the south west corner of the country, near the Austrian and Hungarian borders. Having served as a political and economic centre for monarchies and empires, the history of Bratislava dates back thousands of years, and much of it has been well preserved. To get a great view of the city, drive your hire car up to Bratislava Castle, located in the city centre on the north bank of the Danube River. On clear days, you can even see Austria and Hungary.

Park your rental car in the downtown area, and head off on foot to explore the area known as Old Town. Narrow streets and historical buildings fill the area, a great insight into the past of the city. Check out nearby Michael’s Gate, a medieval fortification built in the early 1300s, and then reconstructed in the 1750s. The gate formed as a checkpoint for those passing through the area, and the watchtower at the top provides more great views of the city.

A popular reason for travelers coming to Slovakia is the scenic mountains and forests with which it abounds. One of the most famous areas for touring is Slovak Paradise National Park in the east of the country. Drive your hire car through the park, and see the magnificent forests, mountains, waterfalls and caves. Be sure to visit Dobsinka Ice Cave, a huge cave which has a frozen interior for much of the year. Visitors have been coming to the cave since the 1800s, and it was in fact the first cave in Europe to have electric lighting.

Jump in your hire car and head north east of the national park, and visit Spis Castle, located above the town of Spisske Podhradie. The castle was built in the 12th century, and is one of the largest castles in Europe. The surrounding area is very suitable to touring with a rental car also, with green rolling hills and pockets of forest across the land.
