Travelling in Perugia with a Car Hire

The heart of Perugia, and a great place to begin your visit, is the main square, Piazza IV Novembre, located right in the centre of the city. Park your rental car near the centre, and explore the square, which has several great examples of architecture around it, including the Palazzo dei Priori, built in the 13th century to house the government, and the Cathedral of San Lorenzo, which dates back to the 14th century. The centrepiece of the square however is Fontana Maggiore, a gothic fountain built in the 12th century to celebrate the completion of an aqueduct which brought water to the city.

Perugia is home to a number of well known businesses, and the one that stands out above the rest is Perugina, a company that has been making confectionary for over 100 years. To go on a tour of the factory, drive your hire car to the neighbourhood of San Sisto, just a short distance east of the city centre, where you will be able to see how their treats are made first hand. Be sure to try their most famous product, Baci, which are chocolate kisses filled with hazelnut.

Being located in central Italy makes Perugia a perfect point to set out and explore this part of the country. To the east you can visit the scenic Lake Trasimeno, and to the west, Monti Sibillini National Park. If you are touring Italy in a north or south direction, then Perugia is great for stopping off, with Rome to the south, and Arezzo to the north, perfect for sampling some local food and wine before continuing on your journeys the next day!
