The capital city of Namibia is Windhoek, which is also the point of arrival for most visitors. A great way to learn a little about the history of the nation, drive your hire car downtown and visit the National Museum of Namibia. Not far from here you can also see a fountain at Post Street Mall which displays meteorites from a meteor shower in the 1830s. The meteorites landed in southern Namibia and it was the largest recorded meteor shower in history.

Drive your rental car out of Windhoek and see the famous desert after which the country is named, the Namib. Thought to be the oldest desert in the world, and also arguably the driest, the Namib covers vast areas and is home to unique wildlife. To the north of Windhoek you can visit Etosha National Park, home to many of Africa’s rare animals including Black Rhinos and Desert Elephants.

Take your hire car along the shoreline to the west and you will soon be at the famous Skeleton Coast. Named after the skeletons left behind during days of whaling, and also the many rusting shipwrecks found along the shoreline, there are few places as isolated and unique. Head towards Cape Cross with your rental car, and visit one of the largest seal colonies accessible to the public. Up to 200,000 seals can be found here at certain times, a truly impressive sight.

In the south of Namibia, you can find the Namib-Naukluft National Park, the largest game park in Africa. The rich orange coloured sand creates breathtaking scenery, and the dunes are among the largest in the world at over 300 metres tall.
