Exploring Maui with a Hire CarThe island has a rich history and unique culture and much of this is presented in attractions around the tourist areas. The main town frequented by visitors is Lahaina, on the west coast of the island. Once a very busy port for whaling ships in the 19th century, the main industries in Lahaina are now tourism, as well as agriculture. The Whale Center of the Pacific is found here, and gives an insight into the world of these marine giants, and the whaling industry which relied on them for trade. Now that whaling has ceased in the area, Humpback whales coming close to the sure are very common. Whale watching tours operate between December and March, however the whales can often be seen from the shore also. Drive your rental car a little north-west of the town centre, and you will find the Lahaina Jodo Mission, a Japanese style Buddhist temple right beside the beach. The temple was built for the many Japanese residents in the area who worked in the sugar cane and pineapple industries, and is home to a massive 90 ft high pagoda, as well as the largest Buddha statue outside of Japan. Maui has incorporated the beautiful natural resources present into most of the activities for tourists, and there is an endless list of things to do. Snorkelling and scuba diving are very popular, with colourful reefs throughout the area. Some reefs are accessible by boat, however there are many which can be reached by wading out from the shore. Around these reefs you can expect to see abundant exotic sea life, including rare species of fish and turtles. Many of the beaches on the island provide excellent surfing conditions also, and are one of the most common reasons visitors come to Hawaii from all around the world. The list of activities to choose from on dry land seem endless too, with mountain biking, hiking, helicopter rides and quadbike tours all very popular. Highly recommended for visitors to the island, is the drive to Hana on the east coast, along Highway 36. Jump in your hire car and enjoy the scenic drive which will take you though lush rainforests, waterfalls, beaches and stunning lookouts.
