Located at the convergence of the Moselle and Rhine rivers, Koblenz is blessed with a backdrop of ancient forests, quiet villages and historical buildings, making it an ideal region to tour with a rental car. Auto Europe offers several pick up locations and a large fleet selection, so finding a car rental in Koblenz is both easy and economical. Travelling in Koblenz with a Car HireFirst stop for most travellers in Koblenz is the point at which the two rivers merge. Known as Deutsches Eck (German Corner), a visit here provides a great introduction to the area, and show how important the region was both in a defensive sense, as well as for transporting goods along the rivers. At the point you will also find a massive monument to Emperor Wilhelm, who led the reunification of Germany in the 19th century. If you look across to the other side of the Rhine River from the base of the monument, you will be able to see Festung Ehrenbreitstein, a huge fortress built high up on the hills overlooking the river. You can drive your hire car across the bridge a little south of here, and visit the site, which is the largest preserved fortress in Europe. The museum within contains great displays on the history of the area also, a great way to find out a little more about the part of the world. Although Koblenz was damaged quite heavily during WWII, there are still plenty of great historical sights to visit in the city. Park your rental car a short distance west of the point, and here you can visit several of the city’s famous buildings. A few blocks from the river you will find Deutscher Kaiser, one of the few buildings which survived the war almost undamaged, and not far from here are two of the main churches in the city, Florinskirche and Liebfrauenkirche. Both churches date back to the 12th century and are definitely worth a visit. A short drive south of Koblenz with your hire car, you can see one of the most famous castles in Germany, one which conjures up images of fairytales and magical places in the minds of many visitors. Known as Stolzenfels, the castle was originally built in the 15th century, and although damaged and restored several times, is still a magical place to this day. As the land along the rivers played such an important role in the defence of the region during ancient and medieval times, it’s no surprise to find many castles, fortresses and mansions among the towns and forests in the area. Jump in your hire car and head south of Koblenz, towards the town of Rudesheim, also located on the banks of the Rhine. Rudesheim is the centre of wine production in the area, and a great place to try some local produce. Particularly worth a visit is Bromserburg Castle, built in the 10th century, which now contains a wine museum, showing how wine has traditionally been made in the area.
