Highly recommended is Killarney National Park, which is the oldest national park in Ireland. An excellent example of the Irish wilderness, the park is made up of rugged mountains, forests and waterways and is also home to Ross Castle, built in the 15th century.

Near the town of Kenmare is an ancient site that holds a special place in the heart of locals. A stone circle, thought to be up to 3000 years old lies just outside the town, and is regarded as a place of worship built by Celts who once lived in the area.

Another attraction not to be missed is Staigue Fort near Sneem. Drive your rental car along the ring, and visit the massive circular stone fort which was built over 1,500 years ago, a testament to early cultures in the area. Other towns and villages you will come across on the route include Caherdaniel, Waterville, Cahersiveen and Kells, all with a unique character of their own and definitely worth a visit for anyone lucky enough to be touring here with a rental car!
