A great way to begin your visit to Cordoba is by visiting one of the oldest parts of the city, the Roman Bridge, located just south of the city centre. At the southern end of the bridge you will find the Tower of La Cahorra, which was part of a fortification built in the 1300s to defend the city. A short distance from here, you can also visit Alcazar de los Reyes Cristianos, a superb castle also dating back to the 1300s.

Jump in your rental car and head west of Cordoba, to Medina Azahara, which is located not far from the airport. An archaeological site with huge historical significance, it was here a large city was built from scratch in the 10th century. Although all that remains today is earth covered ruins, excavations have revealed many walls, columns and paintings from the city and palace. Head further west of here with your hire car, and check out Almodovar Castle, located just near the town sharing its name. The castle dates back to the 8th century, and after extensive restoration works is in stunning condition and a must for anyone visiting the area.
