Modern day Caserta was established in the 9th century by Pando, the prince of Capua. Locals from nearby Casertavecchia relocated to the new Caserta throughout the middle ages, eventually leaving very few residents who wished to stay behind. To see the original town of the area, jump in your rental car and take the short drive north to Casertavecchia, which is definitely a must for anyone travelling in these parts. Here you will find Palazzo del Belvedere, a royal hunting lodge, as well as a silk factory which was set up in the 18th century. Far beyond similar operations of it’s time, the factory produced some of the finest silk in the world, and to this day local silk companies still operate, producing the famous fabric.
