Travelling in Ancona with a Car Hire

Having been an important port city for many centuries, Ancona has a rich history, and many great artefacts have been recovered throughout the area. To learn a little about the city’s past, jump in your hire car and head north of the city centre to the National Archaeological Museum of Marche, which is not far from the port. The museum houses great collections of ancient Greek and Roman artefacts, and also has many great works of art on display. Not far from the museum you can also visit Ancona Cathedral, which dates back to the 12th century.

A short drive south of the city you will find Loreto, a small town built high up on a hill. Essentially a commune, Loreto was built around the Basilica of the Holy House, a place of pilgrimage for Italians since the 14th century.

Another great place to visit in the area is the town of Sassoferato, which is to the west of Ancona. Drive your hire car out to the town, which was built near the ruins of Sentinum, an ancient town dating back over 2000 years. The remains of roads and houses can still be seen to this day, giving a truly unique look into the past. While here, be sure to also check out the nearby Frasassi Caves, a huge network of underground caverns discovered only 30 years ago.
