Travelling in Alicante with a Car Hire

Whether you visit Alicante, Spain to soak up the sun on the beaches, see the historical architecture, or simply relax under the palm trees in one of the many parks, your hire car will let you do it all, without relying on guides or waiting on tour groups. A great way to become familiar with the city is by visiting one of the local landmarks, Santa Barbara Castle, located on a large hill near the centre of the city. Drive your rental car up to the castle, which dates back to the 10th century and is one of the largest castles in the Mediterranean. The views from the hill on which the castle is built are amazing, as you will be able to look over the city and stunning coastline.

Having been influenced by several kingdoms and empires such as Greeks, Phoenicians, Romans and Arabs, Alicante is a city with a colourful history and great blend of architecture styles. Drive your rental car a few blocks in from the marina, and visit the area known as old town. Narrow streets, lined with small charming shops and houses make up the area, and give a great insight of how the city has developed. A few notable buildings to visit in old town are the Town Hall, Cathedral of San Nicolas de Bari, built in the 17th century, and Iglesia de Santa Maria, a gothic church dating back to the 1300s.

If you are travelling with children, there are some attractions near Alicante which are highly recommended. A short drive northeast with your rental car, near the town of Benidorm, you can visit Mundomar, an aquarium and marine zoo well known throughout Spain. The same complex also has a marine park called Aqualandia, which is perfect if you are travelling here during hotter months.

Once you have seen the main sights in the area, you can visit some more of the great attractions such as the contemporary and fine arts museums, or simply drive your hire car along the coast and pick a spot on the beach to soak up the sun and enjoy the warm waters of the Mediterranean. With so much to see and do, and an area perfectly suited for holidaymakers, your options are virtually endless and your visit to Alicante will be one to remember!
